NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 10/Sec 4) which is identical with ISO 16773-3 : 2016 ‘Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on coated and uncoated metallic specimens — Part 3: Processing and analysis of data from dummy cells’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Paints, varnishes and related Products Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.

While adopting ISO standards on different test methods, it is observed that there is no Indian standard on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in the field of surface coatings. Considering the importance of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) which is a powerful, rapid and accurate non-destructive method for the evaluation of wide range of materials that has many advantages in comparison with other electrochemical techniques and to follow the uniform practices globally, the Committee felt that it would be more convenient to prepare this standard method by adoption of ISO 16773-3 : 2016 on dual number basis. The usefulness of impedance spectroscopy lies in the ability to distinguish the dielectric and electric properties of individual contributions of components under investigation. It can also provide detailed information of the systems under examination; parameters such as corrosion rate, electrochemical mechanisms and reaction kinetics and detection of localized corrosion.

The already published Indian standards under IS 101 series ‘Methods of sampling and test for paints, varnishes and related products’ are widely used and known to all concerned. Therefore, to maintain the continuity and also to find the relevant test methods instantly, all test methods are being published under title ‘Methods of sampling and test for paints, varnishes and related products’. This standard would be the Section 4 of Part 10 of IS 101 series of Indian Standards on ‘Methods of sampling and test for paints, varnishes and related products: Part 10 Instrumental Analysis.

Besides adopting ISO 16773-3 : 2016, the committee decided to adopt other three parts of ISO 16773 also on dual number basis in order to maintain the complete set of standards on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. The other three standards are being published along with this standard as:

IS 101 (Part 10/Sec 5) Methods of sampling and test for paints, varnishes and related products: Part 10 Instrumental Analysis, Section 5 Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on coated and uncoated metallic specimens — Examples of spectra of polymer-coated and uncoated specimens.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
