NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 1/Sec 7) (Fourth Revision) which is identical with ISO 2811-1 : 2016 ‘Paints and varnishes — Determination of density — Part 1: Pycnometer method’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on recommendation of the Paints, varnishes and Related Products Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1950 and subsequently revised in 1961, 1964 and 1987. During third revision of IS 101 considerable assistance was derived from ISO 2811 : 1974 ‘Paints and varnishes — Determination of density’, issued by the International organization for Standardization to supersede clause 25 of IS 101: 1964 ‘Methods of test for ready mixed paints and enamels (second revision)’ and this standard was developed and published in 1987 as (Part 1/Sec 7) of IS 101 series of standards.

The major changes in this revision are as follows:

a) the information on the accuracy of the analytical balance (6.2) and the thermometer (6.3) was changed;

b) a requirement was added that the sample shall be free from air bubbles; and

c) the spelling of pycnometer was corrected.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard/document’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
