This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical with ISO/IEC 646 : 1991 `Information technology-lSO 7-bit coded character set for information interchange' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of Computer Hardware Sectional Committee (LTD 37) and approval of the Electronics and Telecommunication Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1982 and was largely based on ISO 646 : 1973. Subsequent upon the revision of ISO 646 : 1973, this standard is now being revised to take into account the latest technological developments in this field.
