This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical with ISO/IEC 4873 : 1991 `Information technology - ISO 8-bit code for information interchange - Structure and rules for implementation' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of Computer Hardware Sectional Committee and approval of the Electronics and Telecommunication Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1982 and was largely based on ISO 4873 : 1979. Subsequent upon the revision of ISO 4873 : 1979, this standard is now being revised to take into account the latest technological developments in this field.

The text of the ISO/IEC standard has been approved as suitable for publication as Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to This:
