IS 1060 : Part 5 : Sec 17 : 2024/ISO 8791-4 : 2021 Methods of Sampling and Test for Paper and Allied Products - Part 5 Methods of Test for Paper and Board - Section 17 Determination of Roughness/Smoothness (Air Leak Methods) - Print-Surf Method
NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 5/Sec 17) (First Revision) which is identical to ISO 8791-4 : 2021 'Paper and board - Determination of roughness/smoothness (air leak methods) - Part 4: Print-surf method' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Paper and Its Products Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.
Several methods using different instruments are available to obtain a numerical value indicative of smoothness/roughness. But as results of determinations obtained with different methods are not necessarily convertible, it is necessary to refer the results of this test in terms of specific type of method/instrument used such as Bendsten, Sheffield or print-surf method, etc.
ISO has published relevant test method standards under the three broad based titles namely 'Paper, board and pulps', 'Paper and board' and 'Pulps'. To maintain consistency with the prevailing international practice and also to facilitate search of the relevant test methods instantly, all adopted standards are published under the following two series:
IS 1060 series on 'methods of sampling and test for paper and allied products':
Part 4 Methods of test for paper, board and pulp
Part 5 Methods of test for paper and board
Part 6 Methods of test for paper
Part 7 Methods of test for board
IS 6213 series for 'methods of test for pulps'.
Keeping this in view, this standard was originally published in 2014. Considering the benefits of having a standard which is aligned with that of international best practices, the Committee decide to prepare this standard by identical adoption of ISO 8791-4 : 2007, 'Paper and board - Determination of roughness/smoothness (air leak methods) - Part 4: Print-surf method' under dual numbering.
During this revision, considering that 2014 version was identical adoption of ISO 8791-4 : 2007, the Committee decided to further revise this standard by aligning it with ISO 8791-4 : 2021 under dual numbering. During this revision, following changes have been made:
a) Annex D and Annex E describing the calibration of print-surf instruments have been removed; and
b) Some minor editorial changes have been made.
