IS 1060 : Part 5 : Sec 18 : 2024/ISO 11475 : 2017 Methods of Sampling and Test for Paper and Allied Products - Part 5 Methods of Test for Paper and Board Section 18 Determination of CIE Whiteness, D65/10° (Outdoor Daylight)
NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 5/Sec 18) (First Revision) which is identical to ISO 11475 : 2017 'Paper and board - Determination of CIE whiteness, D65/10 degrees (outdoor daylight)' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Paper and its Products Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.
The CIE whiteness index is important in paper and paperboard industry as the visual appeal of whiteness is crucial for these products. The CIE whiteness index provides a quantitative measure of the whiteness of materials under specified lighting conditions.
ISO has published test method standards related to paper, pulp and board under three broad categories namely 'paper, board and pulps', 'paper and board' and 'pulps'. Related Indian Standards published in IS 1060 (Parts 1, 2 and 3) 'Methods of sampling and test for paper and allied products' and IS 6213 series of standards published for 'Methods of test for pulps' are widely recognized and used in India. To maintain consistency with the prevailing international practices and to retain the existing test methods series, the committee responsible for formulating this standard decided to harmonize the methods of tests prescribed in IS 1060 series and IS 6213 series with those published by ISO and publish these adopted test methods standards in subsequent parts/sections of IS 1060 series or IS 6213 series.
Other parts of IS 1060 series on 'Methods of sampling and test for paper and allied products' in which related Indian standards have been published are:
Part 4 Methods of test for paper, board and pulp
Part 5 Methods of test for paper and board
Part 6 Methods of test for paper
Part 7 Methods of test for board
This section of IS 1060 (Part 5) specifies the procedure to be used for determining the whiteness of papers and paperboards under the CIE D65 daylight illumination conditions. Another standard IS 1060 (Part 5/Sec 19) which is identical adoption of ISO 11476 has been published for determining the whiteness of papers and paperboards under C2 indoor illumination conditions. The other sections of IS 1060 (Part 5) are:
Sec 1 Sampling to determine average quality
Sec 2 Determination of moisture content of a lot - Oven-drying method
Sec 3 Determination of thickness, density and specific volume
Sec 4 Determination of water absorptiveness - Cobb method
Sec 5 Determination of grammage
Sec 6 Determination of tensile properties - Constant rate of elongation method (20 mm/min)
Sec 8 Determination of bending resistance - Taber-type tester
Sec 9 Determination of resistance to picking - Accelerated speed method using the IGTtype tester (electric model)
Sec 10 Determination of smoothness (Bekk method)
Sec 11 Determination of air permeance (medium range) - Bendtsen method
Sec 12 Measurement of specular gloss - 75 degree gloss with a converging beam, TAPPI method
Sec 13 Sheffield method
Sec 14 Determination of air permeance and air resistance (medium range) - Gurley method
Sec 16 Determination of capillary rise - Klemm Method
Sec 17 Determination of roughness/smoothness (air leak methods) - Print-surf method
Sec 19 Determination of CIE whiteness, C/2° (Indoor Illumination conditions)
Sec 20 Determination of roughness/smoothness (air leak methods) - Bendtsen method
Sec 21 Determination of roughness/smoothness (air leak methods) - Sheffield method
This standard was first published in 2014 by identical adoption of ISO 11475 : 2004 'Paper and board - Determination of CIE whiteness, D65/10 degrees (outdoor daylight)' under dual numbering. ISO 11475 : 2004 has been revised into ISO 11475 : 2017. This revision has been undertaken in order to adopt the latest version of ISO 11475.
In this revision, the following changes have been made:
a) This revision allows for calculations to use ASTM E308 for instruments that have bandpass correction and still maintain the non-bandpass correction procedure; and
b) Inclusion of Precision Data.
The text of ISO standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appear referring to this standard, they should be read as 'Indian Standard'; and
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
