NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) which is identical with ISO 5597 : 2018 'Hydraulic fluid power - Cylinders - Dimensions and tolerances of housings for single-acting piston and rod seals in reciprocating applications' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on recommendation of the Fluid Power Systems Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division Council.

In hydraulic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a liquid under pressure within an enclosed circuit. Sealing devices are used to contain the pressurized fluid with components having elements with linear motion, that is, hydraulic cylinders. These sealing devices are used with both cylinder rod and piston seal housings.

This standard was first issued in 1984 based on ISO 5597-1 : 1980 'Hydraulic fluid power - Cylinder rod and piston seals for reciprocating application - Dimensions and tolerances of housing: Part 1 Nominal series'. Later, it was revised in 1994 to align with ISO 5597-1987 'Hydraulic fluid power - Cylinders - Housings for piston and rod seals in reciprocating applications - Dimensions and tolerances'. The second revision of this standard has been undertaken to align it with the latest version of ISO 5597 : 2018.
