This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical with ISO/IEC 1863 : 1990 ?Informationprocessing - 9-track, 12,7 mm (0,5 in) wide magnetic tape for information interchange using NRZ1at 32 ftpmm (800 ftpi) - 32 cpmm (800 cpi)? issued by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) jointly was adopted by theBureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of the Computer Hardware Sectional Committeeand approval of the Electronics and Information Technology Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1986 and was identical with ISO/IEC 1863:1976 and has nowbeen revised to align it with the latest ISO/IEC Publication.

The text of the IEC Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standardwithout deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to-those used in the ?Indian Standards.Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ?International Standard? appear referring to this standard, they should beread as ?Indian Standard?.

b) Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practiceis to use a point ( . ) as the decimal marker.

In this adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which Indian Standardsalso exist. The corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in their places are listedbelow along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated:
