This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical with ISO/IEC 3788 : 1990 Informationprocessing - 9-track, 12,7 mm (0,5 in) wide magnetic tape for information interchange using phaseencoding at 126 ftpmm (3 200 ftpi) - 63 cpmm (1 600 cpi)? issued by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) jointly was adopted by theBureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of the Computer Hardware Sectional Committeeand approvalof the Electronics and Information Technology Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1986 and was identical with ISO/IEC 3788 : 1976 and has nowbeen revised to align it with the latest ISO/IEC Publication.

The text of the ISO/IEC Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standardwithout deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in the Indian Standards.Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ?International Standard? appear referring to this standard, they should beread as ?Indian Standard?.

b) Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practiceis to use a point ( . ) as the decimal marker.
