This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 1177-1985`Information Processing - Character structure for start/stop andsynchronous transmission, `issued by the International Organizationfor Standardization (ISO), was adopted by the Indian StandardsInstitution on the recommendation of the Computers, BusinessMachines and Calculators Sectional Committee and approved by theElectronics and Telecommunication Division Council.

Wherever the words `International Standard appear referring tothis standard, they should be read as `Indian Standard.
