IS 11450 : 2006 Method for Determination of Airborne Asbestos Fibre Concentration in Work Environment by Light Microscopy (Membrane Filter Method)

1 Scope

1.1 This standard covers the method for determinationof number-count concentration of airborne asbestosfibres expressed as the number of fibres/cm³.

1.2 This method is applicable for routine samplingand sample evaluation necessary to assess personalexposure to asbestos fibres and their control inoccupational environment.

1.3 The use of this method has limitations whenapplied to samples containing platy or acicularparticles and consequently a full qualitativeunderstanding of the sample is necessary toimplement this method.

1.4 In this method all particles complying withthe defined geometric condition are, in absence ofother convincing information, to be considered asasbestos fibres and counted as such, thus ensuringthat under-estimates of asbestos exposure areminimized.
