IS 11826 : 1986 Recommended practice for chemical colouring for engineering components in general and for bicycle components

UDC 621.794.5 : 667.762 MTD 24
Reaffirmed 2021

1 Scope

1.1 This recommended practice is intended as an aid inestablishing and maintaining a procedure for chemical colouring ofmetallic fabricated components used in engineering industries fromsteel, copper, brass, zinc, cadmium, aluminium, etc.

1.2 Metal colouring processes are employed mainly for decorativepurposes. Sometimes the colour produced has a functional purposelike identification, corrosion resistance, etc.

1.2.1 Chemical colouring of metals is the process of imparting adesired colour to the surface of the metals by chemical means forachieving either one or all of the characteristics mentioned under1.2.

1.2.2 Chemical colouring may be applied to a wide range ofmetals and its alloys and also to articles electroplated. Theelectrodeposit shall be of sufficient thickness to withstand theaction of the colouring chemicals applied.
