This Indian Standard (Part 1) (First Revision) which is identical with ISO 4531-1 : 1998 ?Vitreousand porcelain enamels - Release of lead and cadmium from enamelled ware in contact with food -Part 1 : Method of test? issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adoptedby the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Ceramicware Sectional Committeeand approval of the Chemical Division Council.

This standard was first published in 1987 as ?Permissible limits and test methods for toxic materialsreleased from enamelware in contact with food?. During revision, the Committee felt that it wouldbe more convenient to split the standard into two parts by adoption of ISO 4531-1 :1998 andISO 4531-2:1998 on dual number basis. Part 1 covered method of test and Part 2 covered permissiblelimits.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attentionis particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ?International Standard? appear referring to this standard, they shouldbe read as ?Indian Standard?.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practiceis to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

In this adopted standard, reference appears to the following International Standard for which IndianStandard also exists. The corresponding Indian Standard which is to be substituted in its place is listedbelow along with its degree of equivalence for the edition indicated:
