NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 1) which is identical to ISO/IEC 7942-1 : 1994 'Information technology - Computer graphics and image processing - Graphical kernel system (GKS) - Part 1: Functional description' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) jointly was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, on the recommendation of the Coding and Processing of Audio, Picture, Multimedia and Hypermedia Information Sectional Committee and approval of the Electronics and Information Technology Division Council.
IS 12369 'Graphical kernel system (GKS) for computer graphics' was first published in 1987 and was identical to ISO 7942 : 1985, issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). IS 12369 is now being published in four parts in line with the latest versions of ISO/IEC 7942 (4 parts), superseding the previous version (IS 12369 : 1987). On publication of these Indian Standards, IS 12369 : 1987 stands withdrawn.

The text of ISO/IEC standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are however not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appears referring to this standard, they should be read as 'Indian Standard'; and
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
