National Foreword

This Indian Standard (Part 1) which is identical with ISO 6426/1: 1982 `Horological vocabulary - Part 1 : Technical and scientificdefinitions, issued by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standardson 8 September 1988 on the recommendation of the Horologicalsectional committee (EDC 82) and approval of the MechanicalEngineering Division Council.

In the adopted standard. certain terminology and conventions arenot identical with those used in Indian Standards, attention isspecially drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words `International Standard appear, referringto this standard, they should be read as `Indian Standard; and

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in IndianStandards the current practice is to use point (.) as the decimalmarker.
