NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) which is identical with ISO 999 : 1996 ‘Information and documentation — Guidelines for the content, organization and presentation of indexes’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Documentation and Information Sectional Committee and approval of the Management and Systems Division Council.

This standard was earlier published as IS 1275 : 1976 ‘Rules for making alphabetical indexes (first revision)’ based on ISO/R 999 : 1968 ‘Index of a publication’. The committee has now decided to adopt this standard under dual numbering system to make pace with the latest international practices. The second revision of this standard has been brought out to align it with the latest version of ISO 999 : 1996.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are however not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
