NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 1) (First Revision) which is identical with ISO 1496-1 : 2013 ‘Series 1 freight containers - Specification and testing - Part 1: General cargo containers for general purposes’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards after the draft finalized by the Transport Packages, Packaging Codes, Freight Containers and Pallets Sectional Committee had been approved by the Transport Engineering Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1993 which was identical with ISO 1496-1 : 1990. The first revision of this standard has been undertaken to align with latest version of ISO 1496-1 : 2013.

This Indian Standard is published in several parts. The other parts in this series are:

Part 2 Thermal containers (second revision)

Part 3 Tank containers for liquids, gases and pressurized dry bulk (first revision)

Part 4 Non-pressurized containers for dry bulk

Part 5 Platform and platform-based containers (first revision)

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point ( . ) as the decimal marker.
