NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard(Part 5/Sec 5) (First Revision) which is identical with ISO 179-1 : 2010 ‘Plastics - Determination of charpy impact properties - Part 1: Non-instrumented impact test’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Plastics Sectional Committee and approval of the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1996 which was identical with ISO 179 : 1993 under dual numbering system. The committee has now decided to revise this standard to align it with the latest version of ISO 179-1 : 2010. The major changes are as follows:

- for test machines (5.1), ISO 13802 has been referred;

- a new sub-clause (6.5) has been added, defining the span between the specimen supports and indicating a convenient position at which it can be measured;

- Annex B, has been added, giving precision data;

- Annex C, has been added, giving a method of measuring the radius of the notch in a notched specimen.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
