NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) which is identical to ISO 6709 : 2022 'Standard representation of geographic point location by coordinates' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Geospatial Information Sectional Committee and the approval of the Electronics and Information Technology Division Council.

This standard was first published in 1992 and was identical to ISO 6709 : 1983.This first revision of this standard was published in 2017 and was identical to ISO 6709 : 2008. The Second revision of the Indian Standard has been taken up to align it with the latest version of ISO 6709 : 2022.

The main changes are as follows:

a) Harmonization with other recently revised ISO/TC 211 International Standards;

b) Clarification of normative requirements to maintain rigid backwards compatibility when required;

c) Correction of the issues contained in the Technical Corrigendum ISO 6709 : 2008/Cor. 1 : 2009;

d) Correction of annexes that contained normative requirements but were labelled as informative;

e) Deletion of annexes and concepts which have changed and were no longer suitable for the revised edition;

f) Correction of instances where European numeric formatting conventions were incorrectly inserted. These conventions will no longer be recommended; and

g) Clarification of editorial issues

The text of ISO standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appear referring to this standard, they should be read as 'Indian Standard'; and

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
