NATIONAL FOREWORD

The Indian Standard (Part 2) (Second Revision) which is identical with ISO 502 : 2015 ‘Coal — Determination of caking power — Gray-King coke test’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Solid Mineral Fuels and Solid Biofuels Sectional Committee and approval of the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.

This standard was first published in 1959 and subsequently revised in 1993. The original standard was prepared on the basis of limited investigational data available with Central Fuel Research Institute, Regional Coal Survey Stations and other centers of investigation and research in those days. The Committee at that time could derive benefit of studying various documents circulated by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which were also in the formative stages. The Committee, responsible for the preparation of this standard had, therefore, envisaged to update the same as and when more data are made available.

In the revision of this standard, the use of transparent borosilicate glass retorts, in addition to those of silica retorts, had been prescribed on the basis of investigational work done and data made available. Besides, a simplified yet reliable method for determination of bulk density of finely crushed electrode carbon/coke breeze had been incorporated in place of the former cumbersome method. The details of various test methods had also been suitably updated.

In the preparation of the first revision, considerable assistance was drawn from ISO 501 : 1981 Coal — Determination of the crucible swelling number and ISO 502: 1982 Coal — Determination of caking payer Gray-King coke test. This standard covers three methods of tests namely Caking Index, Swelling Number and (LT) Gray-King Assay.

ISO 501 : 1981 and ISO 502 : 1982 have been revised as ISO 501: 2012 and ISO 502: 2015 and ISO has also published a separate ISO 15585 : 2006 on Hard coal — Determination of caking index. The Sectional Committee has therefore decided to undertake second revision of this standard by adopting these ISO standards as three different parts of IS 1353 under dual numbering system. Consequently the designation and title of the standard has been modified.

This Indian Standard is published in three parts. The other parts in this series are:

Part 1 Determination of the crucible swelling number

Part 3 Determination of caking index

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
