Reaffirmed 2018 |
1 Scope
1.1 This standard covers the special features of design andconstruction for improving earthquake resistance of buildings oflow-strength masonry.
1.1.1 The provisions of this standard are applicable in seismiczones III to V. No special provisions are considered necessary forbuildings in seismic zones I and II.
1.1.2 The various provisions of IS 4326 : 1993 regarding generalprinciples, special construction features, types of construction, categories of buildings and masonry construction with rectangularmasonry units are generally applicable to the masonry buildings oflow strength dealt with in this standard. There are however certainrestrictions, exceptions and additional details which arespecifically included herein. For completeness however allnecessary portions are repeated here.
NOTE - Attention is hereby drawn to the fact that low-strengthmasonry as dealt with herein will neither qualify as engineeredconstruction nor totally free from collapse in the severe seismicintensities VIII or IX. However, inclusion of special seismicdesign and construction features provided herein will raise theirseismic resistance appreciably, reducing greatly the chances ofcollapse even in such seismic intensities.
