IS 1393 : 1961 Code of practice for training and testing of oxy acetylene welders

UDC 621.791.565.004.2 MTD 11
Reaffirmed 2019

1 Scope

1.1 This code recommends minimum requirements for a course ofinstruction in manual oxy-acetylene welding and cutting - asapplicable to light engineering industry (Section I) and to generalengineering industry (Sections I and II) and prescribes certainstandard tests comprising the initial qualification tests at thetraining establishment and subsequent annual and periodic tests forpracticing welders.

Note - Training for welding in overhead position has beenomitted from the scope of this Code in view of its very limitedapplication in light and general engineering industry.

1.2 The principal objectives of the course of instructioncovered by the code are:

a) to coach the trainee in the fundamental techniques and safepractices of oxy-acetylene welding and cutting,

b) to give the trainee a good understanding of the propermethods of oxy-acetylene welding and cutting,

c) to enable the trainee to acquire enough skill inoxy-acetylene welding and cutting to pass the qualification testsprescribed in this code, and

d) to provide the trainee with a basic knowledge of the theoryof oxy-acetylene welding and cutting.

1.2.1 The course of instruction is not expected to produce anexperienced welder, but rather a welder with enough skill `andknowledge so that he will be of immediate value to industry as awelder on less difficult work and will be able, by gainingexperience in industry, to progress rapidly to work of greaterdifficulty and responsibility.

1.3 The standard tests prescribed in this code comprise thefollowing:

a) Initial Qualification Test - The test which the trainee shallbe required to pass before completing his course of training. Thepassing of this test indicates that the welder has enough basicskill and knowledge to be of value to industry as a welder; and

b) Annual and Periodic Tests - The check tests designed to beapplied at regular intervals for ensuring that a welder actuallyengaged on work has continued to maintain a standard of proficiencyas required by the initial qualification test.
