NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard [P : 19] (Second Revision) which is identical with ISO 5275 : 2003 ‘Petroleum products and hydrocarbon solvents - Detection of thiols and other sulfur species - Doctor test’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Methods of Test for Petroleum, Petroleum Products and Lubricants Sectional Committee and approval of the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.

The first revision of this standard was done in 1989 to adapt IP/30/81 published by Institute of Petroleum. The Committee has now decided to adopt this standard under dual numbering system inorder to make pace with the latest version of ISO 5275 : 2003.

Another standard, IS 1448 [P : 109] exists for ‘Petroleum products - Determination of thiol (mercaptan) sulphur in light and middle distillate fuels - Potentiometric method’. This method is applicable when thiol (mercaptan) sulphur in light distillates, such as, gasolines and naphtha fractions, and middle distillate fuels, such as, kerosene and gas oils are in the range of 0.000 3 percent(m/m) to 0.010 0 percent(m/m) or (3 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg).

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
