1 Scope
1.1 This standard [Part 1/Section 2] covers a procedure for thedetermination of basic constituents in petroleum products andlubricants (see Note below). The test method resolves theseconstituents into groups having weak-base and strong-baseionization properties, provided the dissociation constants of themore strongly basic compounds are at least 1 000 times that of thenext weaker groups.
Note - In new and used oils, the constituents which can beconsidered to have basic properties are primarily organic andinorganic bases including amino compounds, although contain saltsof heavy metals, salt of weak acids, basic salts of polyacidiccompounds, and some additives, such as inhibitors or detergents mayshow basic characteristics.
1.1.1 This test method covers base numbers up to 70. While itcan be extended to higher base numbers, the precision of the testmethod for base numbers greater than 70 has not been determined.
1.2 This test method may be used to indicate relative changesthat occur in an oil during use under oxidizing or other serviceconditions regardless of the colour or other properties of theresulting oil (see Note below). Although the analysis is made underclosely specified conditions, the method is not intended to, anddoes not, result in reported basic properties which can be usedunder all service conditions to predict performance of an oil; forexample, no overall relationship is known between bearing corrosionor the control of corrosive wear in the engine and base number.
Note - Base number obtained by this method may or may not benumerically the same as those obtained by the base number portionof former test method, IS 1448 : Part 1 : 1971.
1.3 This standard may involve hazardous materials, operationsand equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety andhealth practices and determine the applicability of regulatorylimitations prior to use.
