NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 1) which is identical to ISO 12625-1 : 2019 'Tissue paper and tissue products - Part 1 Vocabulary' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Paper and its Products Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.
This standard defines terms for the determination of the physical properties of tissue paper manufactured using creping or un-creped techniques, and includes products made using a combination of these tissue-making processes.
Tissue products form an important and growing market for single-use disposable hygiene and industrial products. The current range of these familiar products includes toilet tissue, facial tissue, kitchen/household towels, hand towels, handkerchiefs, table napkins, mats, industrial wipes, other absorbent tissue papers and lotion-treated products. Tissue paper manufacturing technology has evolved and diverged from 'ordinary' paper technology, therefore a new glossary has become necessary.
The purpose of this document is to allow a common understanding of the various tissue-making terms between tissue manufacturers, tissue converters and tissue customers, and to facilitate the harmonization of testing methods.
ISO has published standards for vocabulary and methods of test for tissue paper and tissue products under the ISO 12625 series of standards. To align with international best practices and ensure consistency within the Indian context, the concerned sectional committee of BIS decided to harmonize the vocabulary and methods of test of tissue paper and tissue products with those published by ISO. The committee also decided to publish all the concerned standards under IS 14661 series, with its parts addressing specific aspects of tissue paper and tissue products as given below:
Part 1 Vocabulary
Part 2 Specification
Part 3 Methods of test
This part of IS 14661 establishes general principles for the use of terms in the entire working field of tissue paper and tissue products. It permits the use of a common terminology in industry and commerce. The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions and terminologies are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appear referring to this standard, they should be read as 'Indian Standard'; and
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
