NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 3/Sec 7) which is identical to ISO 12625-17 : 2021 'Tissue paper and tissue products - Part 17: Determination of disintegration in water' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Paper and Paper Products Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.
Disintegration is an important property of tissue paper and tissue products, especially in the case of toilet paper, which need to break down quickly in water to prevent clogging of plumbing lines.
The fact that not only end-use tissue products but also the base tissue paper from which these products are made, is the subject of trade between companies and countries, means that there is a genuine need for a consistent measure of disintegration in water that can be applied to tissue products at any stage of their manufacture.
ISO has published standards for vocabulary and methods of test for tissue paper and tissue products under the ISO 12625 series of standards. To align with international best practices and ensure consistency within the Indian context, the concerned sectional committee of BIS decided to harmonize the vocabulary and methods of test of tissue paper and tissue products with those published by ISO. The committee also decided to publish all the concerned standards under IS 14661 series, with its parts addressing specific aspects of tissue paper and tissue products as given below:
Part 1 Vocabulary
Part 2 Specification
Part 3 Methods of test
Part 3 of IS 14661 series is further subdivided into several sections, each addressing methods of test for specific parameters.
This Section of IS 14661 (Part 3) specifies a method to assess the disintegration of tissue paper and tissue products when subjected to mechanical agitation in water for 30 s, 2 min and 10 min. Other sections of IS 14661 (Part 3) are:
Sec 1 Determination of thickness, bulking thickness and apparent bulk density and bulk
Sec 2 Determination of tensile strength, stretch at maximum force and tensile energy absorption
Sec 3 Determination of wet tensile strength
Sec 4 Determination of grammage
Sec 5 Determination of optical properties - Measurement of brightness and colour with D65/10° (outdoor daylight)
Sec 6 Water-absorption time and water-absorption capacity, basket-immersion test method
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions and terminologies are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appear referring to this standard, they should be read as 'Indian Standard'; and
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
