NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Third Revision) which is identical with ISO 5764 : 2009 ‘Milk - Determination of freezing point - Thermistor cryoscope method (Reference method)’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Dairy Products and Equipment Sectional Committee and approval of the Food and Agriculture Division Council.

This standard was first published in 1962 and covered the method for determination of freezing-point depression of milk by the Hortvet method. It was subsequently revised in 1977 to include an additional method using a modified Gerber-Cryoscope for determination of freezing-point depression of milk. The second revision was brought out to align the standard with the corresponding International StandardISO 5764 : 2002 ‘Milk - Determination of freezing point - Thermistor cryoscope method (Reference method)’ under dual numbering and covered the determination of freezing point of milk by thermistor cryoscope method. This revision has been undertaken to align the standard with the latest version of ISO 5764 which has replaced ISO 5764 : 2002 after incorporation of technical changes.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions and terminologies are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
