NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 2) (Second Revision) which is identical to ISO 4384-2 : 2022 Plain bearings - Hardness testing of bearing metals - Part 2 : Solid materials' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Bearing Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division Council.

Due to the heterogeneous structural composition of plain bearing metals, the basic principles of Brinell hardness testing are applicable but necessitate some specific considerations. These include specimen preparation, particularly surface preparation, the thickness of the metal, load conditions, indenter size, and temperature. These unique factors distinguish hardness testing for plain bearings from standard Brinell tests. These considerations aim to ensure that the tested material accurately reflects its performance in the actual bearing application.

This Indian Standard was published in 2000 and subsequently revised in 2019. First revision wasbased on ISO 4384-2 : 2011 Plain bearings - Hardness testing of bearing metals - Part 2 : Solid materials', issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The second revision of this standard has been undertaken to align it with the current version of ISO 4384-2.

The major changes in this revision are as follows:

a)Normative references have been added; and

b)A new clause on "Procedure" has been added. This clause enlists the test conditions andprocedure for testing the hardness.
