NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 2) which is identical with ISO 3166-2 : 2013 ‘Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions — Part 2: Country subdivision codes’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Documentation and Information Sectional Committee and approval of the Management and Systems Division Council.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
This ISO Standard was previously published in 1974, 1981, 1988 and 1993. In 1997, it was split into three parts under the title ‘Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions’. The other parts of this standard are:
Part 1 Country codes
Part 3 Code for formerly used names of countries
This standard establishes a code that represents the names of the principal administrative divisions, or similar areas, of the countries, etc, included in this standard.
