NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 1) (First Revision) which is identical with ISO 3408-1 : 2006 ‘Ball screws - Part 1: Vocabulary and designation’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Machine Tools, Machine Tool Elements and Holding Devices Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division Council.

This standard was first published in 2000 by adopting ISO 3408-1 : 1991. Since ISO has revised the standard and to keep pace with the international practices, the technical committee has decided to revise the standard in line with ISO 3408-1 : 2006.

This standard deals with ball screws used on machine tools and is issued in three parts. The other parts in the series are:

Part 2 Nominal diameters and nominal leads - Metric series

Part 3 Acceptance conditions and acceptance tests

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminology and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear, referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
