Revised Standard from Last Update.

NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical with ISO 3061 : 2008 ‘Oil of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.)’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on recommendation of the Fragrance and Flavour Sectional Committee and approval of the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 2001 and it was based on data generated by CFTRI, Mysore on the Oil of black pepper obtained from 17 varieties of pepper grown mostly in Kerala as well as the data available from Indian manufacturers. The first revision of this standard has been undertaken to align it with the ISO 3061 : 2008.

ISO 3061 : 2008 originally prescribes specifications of oil of black pepper cultivated in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Madagascar, respectively. However, while adopting this International Standard as an Indian Standard, only Indian type black pepper oil specification is retained. Further, in the International Standard, the requirements of relative density and refractive index are prescribed at 20°C. The Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard decided to incorporate values for these important characteristics at 27°C also so as to cater to the domestic needs.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
