IS 15298 : Part 2 : 2024 Personal Protective Equipment - Part 2 Safety Footwear (ISO 20345 : 2021, MOD)

This Indian Standard (Part 2) (Third Revision) which is modified adoption of ISO 20345 : 2021 'Personal protective equipment - Safety footwear' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Footwear Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.
This Standard specifies basic and additional (optional) requirements for safety footwear used for general purpose. It includes, for example, mechanical risks, slip resistance, thermal risks and ergonomic behavior. It also specifies requirements for safety footwear equipped with customized insocks, customized safety footwear or individual manufactured customized safety footwear. This standard does not cover the property of high visibility because of interaction with the clothing (trousers cover the footwear) and work area conditions (dirt and mud).

This standard was first published in 2002 which was identical to ISO 8782-2 : 1998 under dual numbering. The standard was revised in 2011 by adopting ISO 20345 : 2004 which was revision of ISO 8782-2. The standard was subsequently revised in 2016 to adopt the latest version of ISO 20345 : 2021.
This third revision has been brought out to adopt the latest version of ISO 20345 : 2021 along with amendment no. 1, published in 2024. In this revision following changes have been done:
a) Various terms and definitions have been revised (see 3);
b) Figure 1 to 4 have been revised;
c) Tables 1, 2 and 3 have been revised;
d) Heel area has been defined (see 5.2.3);
e) Toe protection, depending on ISO 22568-1 and ISO 22568-2, exchanging EN 12568 : 2010;
f) Requirement on slip resistance has been revised (see 5.3.5 and 6.2.10); marking 'SRA', 'SRB' and 'SRC' have been deleted; provision of marking 'SR' and 'Ø' have been introduced;
g) pH value and chromium VI tests have been added in 5.3.6; former separate clauses under upper, lining, tongue and insole/insock have been deleted;
h) Requirement for seam strength of hybrid footwear have been added (see 5.3.7);
j) Requirement for upper materials not fulfilling WVP have been explained (see 5.4.6);
k) Abrasion of insoles have been revised (see 5.7.4);
m) Outsole requirements have been revised (see 5.8);
n) Outsole thickness have been revised (see 5.8.2.1);
p) Flexing resistance of outsole have been clarified (see 5.8.5);
q) Perforation resistant insert, depending on ISO 22568-3 and ISO 22568-4, exchanging EN 12568 : 2010;
r) Tolerance added (see 6.2.3.1);
s) Former Annex A 'Hybrid footwear' has now been included in the form of general text (see Table 2 and 5.4.1.2);
t) Optional requirement of metatarsal protection have been revised (see 6.2.6);
u) Optional requirement on ankle protection have been clarified (see 6.2.7);
v) Optional requirement for 'SC' scuff cap abrasion has been added (see 6.2.9);
w) Water penetration and absorption, symbol 'WRU' deleted, symbol “WPA” introduced;
y) Optional requirement for 'LG' ladder grip of outsoles has been added (see 6.4.3);
z) Marking requirements have been revised (see Table 16 and Table 20);
aa) Two new categories have been added, namely S6 and S7 (see Table 20);
bb) Information on obsolescence date has been added (see 8.5);
cc) Annex A with requirements for customized safety footwear has been added;
dd) Annex B 'Assessment of the footwear by the wearer' has been added;
ee) Annex C 'Slip resistance' has been added; and
ff) Requirement for electrically insulating footwear has been deleted.
Subsequently, ISO has published an Amendment No. 1 to this standard, which has been adopted in the revised version. In this Amendment, following changes have been made:
a) Normative references have been updated;
b) Clauses 5.3.2.5, 5.3.2.6, 5.3.2.7, 5.3.3, 5.3.6, 5.4.1.1, 5.4.1.2, 5.4.6, 5.5.4, 5.7.3, 5.7.4.1, 5.8.5, 5.8.7, 6.1, 6.2.1.1.3, 6.2.1.1.4, 6.2.1.3, 6.2.7, 6.2.9, 7 e), 8.2, 8.2.2, 8.4 have been modified ;
c) Table 2 and Table 16 has been modified; and
d) Bibliography has been updated.
In this standard, certain modifications due to particular needs of Indian footwear industry have been made. These technical modifications have been mentioned in National Annex A' at the end of existing text.
Certain conventions and terminologies are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words `International Standard' appear referring to this standard, they should be read as `Indian Standard'; and
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standard, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
