NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 8586 : 2012 ‘Sensory analysis - General guidelines for the selection, training and monitoring of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Test Methods for Food Products Sectional Committee and approval of Food and Agriculture Division Council.

Earlier the requirements of this standard were published in two parts that is IS 15317 (Part 1) : 2003/8586-1 : 1993 ‘Sensory analysis - General guidance for the selection, training and monitoring of assessors: Part 1 Selected assessors’ and IS 15317 (Part 2) : 2003/ISO 8586-2 : 1993 ‘Sensory analysis - General guidance for the selection, training and monitoring of assessors: Part 2 Experts’. ISO 8586 : 2012 ‘Sensory analysis - General guidelines for the selection, training and monitoring of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors’ has cancelled and replaced ISO 8586-1 : 1993 and ISO 8586-2 : 2008. The main requirements and criteria for the selection, training and monitoring of selected assessors and of expert sensory assessors have been revised to summarize the information given in ISO 8586-1 : 1993 and ISO 8586-2 : 2008.

While reviewing the standards, the Committee decided to amalgamate both parts in one and to align with the latest version of corresponding ISO 8586 : 2012 ‘Sensory analysis - General guidelines for the selection, training and monitoring of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors’ which has replaced ISO 8586-1 : 1993 and ISO 8586-2 : 2008.

This standard shall supersede IS 15317 (Part 1) : 2003/ISO 8586-1 : 1993 and IS 15317 (Part 2) : 2003/ISO 8586-2 : 1993.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are however not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
