1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes a direct method for the determination of nicotine alkaloid retention index and water retention index of cigarette filters by gas - chromatographic analysis.

1.2 The method is applicable to filter cigarettes. This method shall be used unless it is not applicable owing to incomplete recovery of the retained nicotine alkaloid from the filter material (for example, with some types of charcoal filters). In case of tip ventilated cigarettes, the ventilation shall be completely blocked by a suitable self adhesive tape.
