IS 16897 : 2018 Tobacco and Tobacco Products - Portion Packed Snus - Specification
Reaffirmed 2023
NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Tobacco and Tobacco Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food and Agriculture Divisional Council.
Snus, is a smokeless tobacco preparation consumed by sucking. It is being produced in India and is also being imported. Snus is a highly specialized preparation consisting of finely ground tobacco, high moisture and a number of flavourings and other ingredients. The snus so produced is packed either loose or in pouches, each pouch containing just enough quantity for a one-time-use. Since snus is gaining popularity and the range of products is likely to increase, it was felt necessary to lay down specification for this product.
While formulating this standard, necessary consideration has been given to the relevant rules prescribed by the Government of India under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. This standard is however, subject to the restriction imposed under these, wherever applicable.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
