IS 16915 : 2018/ISO/TS 16181 : 2011 Footwear — Critical Substances Potentially Present in Footwear and Footwear Components — Determination of Phthalates in Footwear Materials

ICS 61.060

CHD 19

Revised Standard from Last Update.

NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO/TS 16181 : 2011 ‘Footwear — Critical substances potentially present in footwear and footwear components — Determination of phthalates in footwear materials’ issued by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on recommendation of the Footwear Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.

Phthalates are commonly used as plasticizers in polymers. Phthalates are controversial because high doses of many phthalates have shown hormonal activity in rodent studies. Studies on rodents involving large amounts of phthalates have shown damage to the liver, the kidneys, the lungs, and the developing testes. Hence, its use is prohibited in footwear and this standard prescribes a test method for determining the presence of phthalate compounds in footwear materials.

The text of ISO technical specification has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard with the following changes:

a) 3.1.2 Substitute ‘Glass flask with Teflon stopcock’ for ‘Flask’

b) NOTE to 4 Substitute ‘If possible, grind the sample’ for the existing note. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘Technical Specification’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

c) Wherever the words ‘grammes’ or ‘microgrammes’ appear referring to the measurement units, they should be read as ‘grams’ and ‘micrograms’ respectively.

d) Wherever the words ‘Gas chromatograph mass selective device’ appear referring to GC-MS, they should be read as ‘Gas chromatograph Mass Spectrometer’.
