NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical to ISO 16281 : 2025 ‘Rolling bearings — Methods for calculating the modified reference rating life for universally loaded rolling bearings’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Bearing Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division Council. This standard was first published in 2019. This revision has been undertaken to align it with the current version of ISO 16281. In this revision, the following major changes have been done:

a) The coordinate system used in drawings and derivation of formulae has been changed to a right-handed coordinate system;

b) The calculation of load distribution of cylindrical and tapered bearings has been described in greater detail and provisions for the calculation of load distribution and rating life of spherical roller bearings have been added;

c) Additional formulae have been given for the calculation of load distribution of hybrid bearings; and

d) Reference geometries and the description of static equilibrium calculation for different bearing types have been moved to an informative annex.
