NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard which is identical to ISO 23405 : 2022 ‘Tourism and related services - Sustainable tourism - Principles, vocabulary and model’ issued by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of Travel, Tourism & Hospitality Related Services Sectional Committee, and approval of the Service Sector Division Council.

In recent years, sustainability has become increasingly relevance in the tourism industry. Tourists are increasingly looking for sustainable services and products. This has resulted in increased demand for hotels, tour operators, restaurants, and tourist attractions across the tourism industry. To meet these expectations, these organizations have adopted a variety of tactics, communication systems, standards and certification schemes to promote and ensure the sustainability of their activities. The industry expects that by implementing these steps, it would be able to cater to the growing interest and preferences of environmentally and socially conscientious travelers.

Today, there are several references available on sustainable tourism, including private, public, international, regional, and national sources. These references present a wide range of concepts and understandings about sustainable tourism including ISO 21401 and ISO 20611 contain concepts about sustainable tourism.
