NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard which is identical to ISO 20081 : 2005 'Zinc and zinc alloys - Method of sampling - Specifications' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Ores and Feed Stock for Non-Ferrous (Excluding Aluminium and Copper) Industry, their Metals/ Alloys and Products Sectional Committee and approval of the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council.

Since, no specific standard for sampling zinc and zinc alloy ingots existed in the committee; only a common Indian Standard IS 1817 : 1961 'Methods of sampling non-ferrous metals for chemical analysis' was available, which cover the general principles of preparing samples of non-ferrous metals for chemical analysis, the committee decided to adopt ISO 20081 : 2005 standard under dual numbering system. Further, the Indian Standard IS 1817 : 1961 'Methods of sampling non-ferrous metals for chemical analysis' did not specify the number of pieces of ingot to be taken from a lot for preparation of samples as it will vary with the type of material being sampled. Also the committee while reviewing the specification standards, of zinc ingots namely IS 209, IS 13229, IS 4699 and zinc alloy ingots namely IS 713, felt that a separate standard for sampling zinc and zinc alloy ingots is required and to be referred in these standards, for method of sampling.

The text of ISO standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical with those used in Indian Standard. Attention is especially drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appear referring to this standard, it should be read as 'Indian Standard'; and

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
