IS 2362 : 1993 Determination of Water by Karl Fischer Method - Test Method

UDC 543.812 CHD 1

Reaffirmed 2024

1 Scope

1.1 This Indian Standard describes the Karl Fischer method fordetermination of free water or water of crystallization or moisturein solid or liquid chemical products, both organic and inorganic.

1.1.1 The method is not applicable to all the organic andinorganic chemical products. The limitations are:

a) oxidizing agents, such as chromates, dichromates, cupric andferric salts, and higher oxides and peroxides;

b) reducing agents, such as sulphides, thiosulphates andstannous salts;

c) compounds which may form water with components of KarlFischer reagent, namely, basic zinc oxide, salts of weak oxyacids,alkali carbonates and bicarbonates, and berates; and

d) organic compounds, such as quinines, ascorbic acid, peroxycompounds, `active carbonyl compounds, nitrogen compoundscontaining amino or hydrozo nitrogen, and sulphur compounds wheresulphur is not bonded with oxygen. In some cases the method can beemployed with minor modification before operating the finaltitration.

1.1.2 This standard describes electrometric method involvingdirect titration and the back titration.

Note - Certain reagents used, may cause health hazard andtherefore they should be handled carefully.
