NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Third Revision) which is identical to ISO 5593 : 2023 'Rolling bearings - Vocabulary' issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Bearing Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division Council.

This standard was first published in 1964 and subsequently revised in 1988 and 2019. First revision was identical to ISO 5593 : 1984. Second revision of this standard was identical to ISO 5593 : 1997 'Rolling bearings - Vocabulary', issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

In this revision of this standard has been undertaken to align it with the latest version of ISO 5593. This document defines terms applied in the field of rolling bearings and their technology.

The following types of terms are not included:

a) Terms specified in ISO 3823, IS 3824 and ISO 11027 (Part 1); and

b) Terms which are narrowly applied in only one specialized rolling bearing Indian Standard.

The major change incorporated in this revision is that some definitions, figures and notes have been modified.

The text of ISO standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appear referring to this standard, they should be read as 'Indian Standard'; and

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
