1 Scope

This clause of IS 302-1 (1979) is applicable except as follows.

1.1 Replacement

This standard deals with the safety of electric vacuum cleanersand water suction cleaning appliances for household and similarpurposes, including vacuum cleaners for animal grooming, theirrated voltage being not more than 250 V.

This standard also applies to motorized cleaning heads andcurrent-carrying hoses associated with a particular vacuum cleaner.

Appliances not intended for normal household use but whichnevertheless may be a source of danger to the public such asappliances intended to be used by laymen in shops and otherpremises for normal housekeeping purposes are within the scope ofthis standard.

Note 1 Examples are appliances intended to be used for normalhousekeeping purposes in hotels, offices, schools, hospitals andsimilar premises.

So far as is practicable, this standard deals with the commonhazards presented by appliances which are encountered by allpersons in and around the home.

This standard does not in general take into account:

- The use of appliances by young children or infirm personswithout supervision;

- Playing with the appliance by young children.

Note 2 Attention is drawn to the fact that:

- For appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on boardships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary.

Note 3 This standard does not apply to:

- Appliances incorporating heating elements;

- Centrally-sited vacuum cleaners;

- Appliances designed exclusively for industrial purposes;

- Appliances intended to be used in locations where specialconditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive orexplosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).
