NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 23) which is identical with ISO 356 : 1996 ‘Essential oils - Preparation of test samples’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Fragrance and Flavour Ingredients Sectional Committee and approval of the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.
All essential oils, like those which are solid or partially solid at room temperature or those which are cloudy due to the presence of water or suspended particles cannot be analyzed directly. Such essential oils need sample preparation before analysis. ISO 356 has published for such oils. The Committee has accordingly decided to adopt ISO 356 : 1996 under dual number system and while adoption the main title of exiting series of standard, IS 326 has been retained.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are however not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
