NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) which is identical with ISO 8147 : 1995 ?Shipbuilding andmarine structures - Derrick rigs and component parts - Vocabulary? issued by the InternationalOrganization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on therecommendation of the Shipbuilding Sectional Committee and approval of the Transport EngineeringDivision Council.

This standard was first brought out in 1968 and subsequently revised in 1983. The present revisionhas been undertaken to harmonize it with current international practices. In this standard care hasbeen taken to standardize only suitable terms and not to perpetuate unsuitable terms because of theiruse in the past.

The illustrations given against the respective terms are simplified or symbolic representations given inorder to facilitate comprehension; they serve only as examples and are not intended to define theconstruction.

For elucidation, the components of the derrick gear for which terms are given are for typicallycharacteristic derrick rigs according to their position in the assembled rig.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards.Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

Wherever the words ?International Standard? appear referring to this standard, they should beread as ?Indian Standard?.
