NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) which is identical with IEC 60172 : 2015 ‘Test procedure for the determination of the temperature index of the enamelled and tape wrapped winding wires’ issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Winding Wires Sectional Committee and approval of the Electrotechnical Division Council.

This standard was originally published in 1970 and subsequently revised in 1993. The first revision of this standard was based on IEC 60172 : 1987 ‘Test procedure for the determination of the temperature index of the enamelled and tape wrapped winding wires’. The second revision of this standard has been undertaken to align it with the latest version of IEC 60172 : 2015.

The major changes in this revision are as follows:

a) Revision of Clause 1, Scope, to incorporate appropriate text from former Clause 2, Object;

b) Deletion of Clause 2, Object, by placement of its text into existing clauses;

c) New Clause 2, Normative references;

d) Revision of 5.1.1, 5.3 and 5.4;

e) Revision of Clause 7 as to clarify which specimens comply with Table 3 and Table 4;

f) Revision of figures with high-resolution photos and graphs.

The text of IEC Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions, are however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
