This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical withISO 5838-2 : 1991 `Implants for surgery - Skeletal pins and wires -Part 2 : Steinmann skeletal pins - Dimensions', issued by theInternational Organization for Standardization (ISO), was adoptedby the Bureau of Indian Standards, on the recommendations ofOrthopedic Instruments and Accessories Sectional Committee andapproval of Medical Equipment and Hospital Planning DivisionCouncil.

This standard was first published in 1970. Consequent upon thepublication of ISO 5838-2 : 1991 the committee felt the necessityof revising this standard to align its requirements with the latesttechnological developments covering various forms of pin ends thatis circular, square and triangular ends. The first revision of thisstandard has therefore been brought out and the standard is beingpublished as a dual number standard to align it with ISO 5838-2 :1991.

This standard covers only dimensions of Steinmann Skeletal pins.The material and mechanical requirements of these pins are coveredseparately in IS 8261 : Part 4 : 1984 `Pins and wires skeletaltraction: Part 4 Material and mechanical requirements', which is adual number adoption of ISO 5838-1 : 1983.
