IS 6955 : 2008 Subsurface Exploration for Earth and Rockfill Dams - Code of Practice

1 Scope

1.1 This standard gives guidance on the type, extentand details of subsurface explorations needed inconnection with earth and rockfill dams. It is notpossible to lay down the required extent ofexploration to cover all types of cases. The standardprovides guidelines for planning the exploratorywork through various stages of the projectdevelopment. These recommendations may have tobe modified for individual projects depending uponthe site conditions and other conditions peculiar toeach project, such as, height, importance of the damand the heterogeneity of foundation formations.

1.2 The term subsurface exploration, as used herein,covers all types of exploration connected withdetermination of the nature and extent of soil and/orrock below the natural ground surface at/or near thedam site.

1.3 This Code does not however cover the typesand methods of exploration for materials ofconstruction for earth and rockfill dams, such as,soil, rock and material for riprap protection. Thesewill be covered by a separate Code on subsurfaceexploration for construction materials.
