IS 817 : 1966 Code of practice for training and testing of metal arc welders

UDC 621.791.753 : 658.386 MTD 11
Reaffirmed 2019

1 Scope

1.1 This code recommends minimum requirements for a course ofinstruction in manual metal arc welding as applied to mild steeland prescribes certain standard tests, comprising the initialqualification test at the training establishment and subsequentannual and periodic tests for the practicing welder.

1.2 The principal objectives for the course of instructioncovered by the code are:

a) to coach the trainee in the fundamental techniques and safepractices of metal arc welding,

b) to give the trainee a good understanding of the propermethods of metal arc welding as applied to mild steel,

c) to enable the trainee to acquire enough skill in welding topass the qualification tests prescribed in this code, and

d) to provide the trainee with a basic knowledge of weldingtheory.

1.2.1 The course of instruction is not expected to produce anexperienced welder, but rather a welder with enough skill andknowledge so that he will have immediate value to industry as awelder on less difficult work, and will be able, by gainingexperience in industry, to progress rapidly to work of greaterdifficulty and responsibility.

1.3 The standard tests prescribed in the code comprise thefollowing.

1.3.1 Initial Qualification Test - It is the test which thetrainee shall be required to pass before completing his course oftraining. The passing of this test indicates that the welder hasenough basic skill and knowledge, to be of value to industry as awelder.

1.3.2 Th Annual and Periodic Tests - The check tests designed tobe applied at regular intervals for ensuring that a welder actuallyengaged on work has continued to maintain a standard ofproficiency, as required by the initial qualification test.
