NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 386 : 1977 ‘Liquid-in-glass laboratory thermometers — Principles of design, construction and use’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Glass, Glassware and Laboratoryware Sectional Committee and approval of the Chemical Division Council.
This standard was originally published in 1977. The first revision of this standard has been undertaken to align it with the latest version of ISO 386 : 1977.
Liquid-in-glass thermometers are used in industry, laboratories, teaching institutions, homes, hospitals etc, wherever measurement of temperature has any significance. As these thermometers are fragile and are designed to serve a large variety of purposes, it is important that they conform to some specific sets of requirements depending on their end use, so that they provide dependable service and are easily replaceable in case of breakage. For this purpose, it is considered necessary to lay down general guidelines for formulation of specifications for such thermometers.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminologies and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
