This Indian Standard (Part 1) which is identical with ISO 10209-1 : 1992 `Technical product documentation - Vocabulary : Part 1 Terms relating to technical drawings : General and types of drawings', issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of the Drawings Sectional Committee (LM 02) and approval of the Light Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

The original version of this standard IS 8930 : 1978 `Nomenclature for general engineering drawings was based on DIN 199 Engineering Drawings - Nomenclature', issued by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN). International Organization for Standardization has published ISO 10209-1 : 1992 `Technical product documentation - Vocabulary : Part 1 Terms relating to technical drawings : General and types of drawings'. Harmonization of the Indian Standard has been made by the adoption of ISO 10209-1 : 1992.
